The Early Days

As Told By Her Human Mom

Dania came to live with me about a year ago.  It all started simply. I was thinking of getting a cat as a pet after a job related move. A friend  recommended  a Tonkinese.

Never hearing of the Tonkinese I began to gather information about the breed from the Internet.  I had never  owned a cat and didn't know one breed from the other.   So, I found information on how to select a good  breeder along with a list of Tonkinese breeders in the area.

I visited the Web page of a Tonkinese breeder and saw Dania's picture.  Someone once asked how I found my cat.  I said," on the Internet and one should be careful what they do on the Internet, you never know what you will end up with".  E-mail was sent to breeders inquiring about kittens.   I soon heard from Wanda with a nice note asking me to call.  So I called. She was as nice as her note.  Wanda didn't have any kittens to place nor did she know anyone with kittens at that time.  She did have a very sweet two year old cat named Dania.

Dania started going into season too soon after having a litter of kittens and wasn't coming out of it. For health reasons they had her spayed and were going to keep one of her kittens. We talked some more and she learned about my inexperience with cats. Wanda convinced me I would do better with a playful two year old than a kitten.  She ccmmented, I wouldn't have to go through the cat version of the terrible two's. I recently figured, if cat years are like dog years, I got a "know it all teenager", which explains a lot.

A few days later I drove to Baltimore to meet Dania.  She was very sweet and didn't even set off my allergies (a problem I have with dogs and some cats).  I arranged to pick her up in a couple of weeks.  Stitches would be out and Dania would be ready for her new home.

 The Preparation
Shopping

I spent the next weekend dragging my girlfriend (a cat owner) through pet stores making sure I had everything I needed to make Dania feel at home. Her favorite food (both dry and caned),  new food dishes, litter box (same brand of litter), toys,  treats, and scratching post, were purchased.  Oh yes, we can't forget the all important carrier to bring her home.

The fateful day finally came and I drove back to Baltimore to pick up Dania.  The breeder had her ready along with a couple of Dania's favorite toys so she would have the familiar smell of her old home and not feel so lonely.  The drive home went well. Dania only cried when we slowed down for traffic lights and toll booths.
Dania's three babies.
